What a Web Designer should look for in a Web Hosting Company
Web Designers are often confronted with the unique challenge of recommending hosting companies to their customers. The sad fact is that there are probably ten times and many bad web hosting companies as there are good hosting companies. So here are some tips to help you decide how to select the right hosting company and what are the criteria a web designer should look for in a hosting company. One of the ways you can tell how good a web hosting company is is actually based on what they don’t say.
Depending on your criteria you could be looking at different hosting companies to meet your needs.
Who do we trust to host this site?
Important Questions to Ask yourself
- Do you require a windows platform or a linux platform?
- Does the web host support your open source project of choice?
- Does the Host offer Automated Installation of Popular CMS’s like wordpress, joomla, Drupal ?
- Do they have a control panel such as CPanel
- Which version of PHP do they offer?
- Do they offer SSL certificate installation?
- Do they have a shared SSL certificate already installed for you to use?
- Do they have a file manager so you can update your site from a browser?
- Do you have unusually high storage or bandwidth requirements?
Most web hosts offer comparable features but where one host can really earn there money is based on the level of service they offer.Service levels vary greatly depending on the host you choose. I have been using a variety of web hosting companies for a long time and have experienced first hand the issues that can plague a host. Often times web hosting companies do not start off with bad customer service they unfortunately grow into bad customer services. Either they have an infrastructure that does not scaled well or they have an organization chart that does not scale well.
Avoid a common mistake. Don’t shop only on Price!
Things to look for in a Web Hosting Company
- Uptime
- Service Level Guarantee
- Fair pricing
- Feature set
- Variety of available platforms
- Migration path when you outgrow the shared platform
Fortunately I have found a hosting company that meets and exceeds all of my needs. I actually use them as a reseller for my own customers. Their reseller hosting or shared hosting is first rate and scales up well into the tens of thousands of page views a month before you need a dedicated server or virtual server account for you site. The hosting company I use for this site and the one I recommend is Host Gator. I have about 15 sites hosted with them right now and could not be happier.
Don’t take my word for it if you search anywhere online looking for hosting reviews you will find many positive recommendations for Host gator. They are surprisingly inexpensive as well. Whatever your needs are from basic shared hosting to reseller hosting packages to create another income stream for your web design or development business they are the provider I recommend. I have a special link to one of there reseller promotions below. What are you waiting for check them out now so you can rest easy knowing you have the right hosting company!

Check out what others are saying about this post...[...] In one of my previous articles on what every good web designer looks for in a hosting company I recommended Host Gator for their outstanding feature set and top notch service. But sometimes you need more. When you find that you or your web design business has outgrown Host Gator or regular shared hosting in general I would recommend you take a serious look at Cartika Web Hosting. [...]
